The Purpose of Poetry

Hey guys!

So I was doing some research for a school project and stumbled upon this post from the Writer's Digest blog! I LOVED IT! It basically explained poetry. Why I write it, and why it's valuable! I've been asked so many times, "what's with you and poetry?" "why do you like poetry?" or even "what's the point of this poetry assignment?" Well, the Writer's Digest can walk you through the first two questions if you're wondering why I love poetry. I'll have the link at the end of the article. However, for those of you who are rather pessimistic about poetry, let me open your eyes to a new perspective!

What Does Poetry Do?

1. Poetry gives you a way to process life without the pressure of having to make sense. In fact half the struggle in poetry is turning profound sense into a deep and twisted sentence.
2. Better grammar skills. Sounds dorky, but I'm totally serious on this one! How many different ways can you combine the words in this sentence to make it more confusing, but still grammatically correct? Seriously! Try it!
3. Deeper thoughts. At least for me, I found that writing poetry has made me more bold to explore the world of deep thoughts. It's amazing what you'll find yourself thinking when you allow yourself to just spill over onto paper.
4. Thinking for yourself. I'm sure someone is going to go and try to do this as soon as I say it's not doable, but when exploring the deep canyons of your mind, and spitting up deep thoughts into a poem, it's pretty hard to go back to the textbook for an opinion. There is no book out there that is going to tell you how to think or what to think.

Books offer ideas, but where you take them is up to you. This is why people can sin with their thoughts. Anyone can take their thoughts to a wrong place, but in the end you can learn a lot about yourself. Let your mind roam free for a second. What is the first thing you think of? Is that your priority? Write a poem about that. Spill all your emotions and deep thoughts into a dramatic description. What do you think about that topic? Are you angry? Empty? Lonely? Happy? Thankful? Left out? In love? Desperate? Watch your language when you write. Are you wordy? Concise? Vulgar? Excited to use big words? Small word person? How do your thoughts flow? Are they beautifully connected, or are the connections choppy???

There is so much emotional and practical application for poetry! For me, it's become a very fortified foggy-glassed stronghold. Now I know this sounds like a paradox, but let me digest the poetic statement for you.

Breaking Down Poetry Description

Fortified- poetry adds protection over what you want to say. It keeps your emotions safe.
foggy-glassed- poetry is a widow to the soul, but its also so confusing sometimes that you can't really tell what is going on in the poet's head.
stronghold- its safe. Your emotions are safely kept and expressed without judgment, unless it be your own, I'm the form of poetry. People wi'' hear your voice, but they can't walk away with all of your secrets.
